To all the people who think downloads are broken

They're not.

One thing that may make it appear like they are broken is that there is currently nothing that you can click on the PlanetMirror download page to access the PDF. If you click on the filename or right-click->Save As on the filename you will just get the download page again rather than the file. This used to work, but PlanetMirror has since changed some things around.

The PDF is now only loaded after a 3-second delay. The problem with this is that most browsers are configured to load that PDF in the browser. Since many of our PDFs are large [more ...]

Big batch of retro docs posted

My project at work ended up going a few weeks over our intended end date, but I think we're finally finished now. It was an exhausting process, so I made sure to relax for a bit, but now I'm posting an update of over 100 docs for your instructional pleasure!

We've more than doubled the size of our Atari 2600 section by effectively mirroring a bunch of docs from AtariAge. Thanks to e4450 for uploading most of them here.

Other highlights in this update include:

about 20 new ZX Spectrum docs (ian)
Titan Quest, The Settlers II 10th Anniversary (aiguo)
Company of Heroes, Dreamfall, and [more ...]

So I managed to get about 65 new docs posted after all. Hope you guys enjoy it. I think I was able to post almost all of the requests that people had listed on the previous news item.

Big thanks goes out to Pix for some GREAT classic computer game documentation in there. You rock! He has supplied us with:

EcoQuest
Heart of China
Hero's Quest I
Manhunter 2 - San Francisco
Mean Streets
Pepper's Adventures In Time
Police Quest
Quest for Glory III
Rise of the Dragon
Sorcerian
Tangled Tales
Thexder
Times of Lore
Original manual for Ultima I for the Apple II computer
Cluebooks for Ultima III, IV, V, VI, and Underworld

And here are some [more ...]

Will be posting stuff soon... let me know what you're really dying for

Well, it's been a rough road for me to reinstall EVERYTHING that I had on that machine. I've had to do it in between being out of town for a week and working 60-hour weeks at my day job (heading towards the end of one of our projects and we've gotta get it out the door on time). And it's such a slow and tedious process...

BUT I think my computer is mostly back up to where I had it before the crash (minus some 40 GB of files that hadn't been burned to a disc yet). So I'm going to try [more ...]

Hard drive crashes...

They happen at the most inopportune times, don't they? Well, I just had a major HD failure on my home computer a couple days ago, so I am out of commission for the moment on site updates (which I was in the middle of doing when it crashed).

Now I just repeatedly hear the spin up, 2 clicks, and spin down on my hard drive when it tries to boot and the BIOS doesn't recognize it.... sigh... The worst part is that it was my newest drive, so I would backup stuff from everywhere else onto it. Of all the drives [more ...]

New user registration is working again (I think)

So it looks like the email verifications for new users hadn't been going out for the past few weeks. I think I managed to fix the problem yesterday because most of the people that registered since I made the change are now verified users.

Anyway, if you tried to sign up over the past few weeks, register for an account again. I have wiped all unverified users from the database, so you should be able to register for your original username again.

If you register from this point forward and still don't receive the verification email, let me know by emailing me at [more ...]

Rattling the cup

I had mentioned in the past that I might have to do this and it looks like the time is now...

The money that the site ads have been pulling in is less than half what it was at this time last month. I don't know what's different, but it's unacceptable and I'm about to have a huge bill because of it. I keep tweaking ad settings and rotation and trying other ideas, but no luck yet.

So, I decided I would try and see, out of all the people who have downloaded over 1 million docs since April '05, how many (if [more ...]

I was going about my business today and browsing around some of the abandonware sites trying to see what's been going on since I have been a little out of the loop lately. I noticed that Da Fast Lane had announced the winners of their annual Abandonware Awards about a week ago.

As I scanned through the familiar names on the list, much to my surprise I found that replacementdocs had not only been nominated, but had been voted the winner in the "Best Resource" category! Voting had closed back in April, but I was completely oblivious to the fact that [more ...]
