Welcome to replacementdocs!

- Have you ever rented a game that came with no instructions?
- Have you ever bought a used game and found out later that the package you received didn't come with an essential map or answers to copy protection questions required to play the game?
- Have you ever bought a re-released game and then realized that they only included an Installation Guide, no game instructions at all?
- Has your wife (or husband!) ever just thrown out all your game manuals because they thought "you didn't need them anymore"?

If so, replacementdocs is here to help! We're here to provide you with those manuals for situations when you really should've had them to begin with.

The replacementdocs.com pledge
replacementdocs.com pledges to bring you only high quality scanned images of instruction manuals in their full, original format with all original artwork and other graphical elements intact. There will be no text-only documentation unless that is how it was originally released. There will also be no conversion to monochrome images or any other severe quality degradation.

News :: Sorry for the scare
Some people who tried to access rdocs in the past 12 hours or so may have been greeted by a domain name parking page. That was my fault. The page wasn't hacked. The domain name wasn't hijacked. It was just that the credit card I had on file with my domain name registrar was expired so my automatic renewal failed.

No worries though, all is back to normal.

News :: Update on site growth
Every now and then I like to look at some statistics on the size of this archive to see how it's grown. So I thought I'd share with everyone:

There are now over 6500 docs totaling over 15 GB in the archive available for public download. All these docs come from the combined efforts of over 300 different contributors. Since re-opening in April 2005, rdocs has served over 3 million downloads totaling just over 10 TB (that's 10,000 GB) worth of docs to visitors around the world.

As a point of reference, I looked at statistics back in January 2007. Back then, the size of the archive had just topped 10 GB and we had served 5 TB to visitors.

Thank goodness web space and bandwidth has gotten cheaper since I first opened this site.

News :: Uploading has been re-enabled
All registered members can now resume uploading docs. Everything is working the same as before with one exception - currently the upload filesize limit is 7MB. I plan on increasing that limit but it's not as simple as it sounds and it may be a little while before I get to it.

Fortunately, only about 15% of contributions are over this limit anyway. For those that are larger than 7MB I suggest using WinRAR or a similar archiving tool to split the PDF into multiple RAR files then upload each separately.

Also, I managed to find a backup of all the files just before the unexpected server change. So, the good news is that none of the docs that were previously uploaded have been lost to the best of my knowledge. I am currently restoring all the previously uploaded material to the server. It is about halfway done and may take another day or so to complete. Once that is done, Frequent Contributors should once again have full access to all pending uploads again.

News :: 70 docs posted - Uploads should be back soon
Just posted 70 new docs including:

Army of Two (fast fate)
Children of Mana, Mario Kart Wii, Traxxpad, Turok (Electric Fungus)
Dungeon Explorer (Dr. Rockzo)
Eternal Champions (SnTCrash)
Geometry Wars - Galaxies DS (darkuni)
Guitar Hero III, Tony Hawks Proving Ground (drewbar)
Innocent Until Caught (axeman99)
Keepsake (corn)
Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario (Mafelix)
Warcraft II - Beyond the Dark Portal (Peeteer)

Also, I've been working on re-enabling uploads and Frequent Contributor access to pending uploads. I should be finished by this weekend at the latest, so expect that back soon.

News :: Server change - Uploads disabled temporarily
For the curious out there, the site outage last week was due to an unforeseen server change that had to take place and was out of my control. We are now hosted on what should be a more stable (and hopefully faster) server. I have migrated all of the downloads, forum posts, etc. over to the new server now (with the exception of anything that was posted in the last day or two before the outage).

These changes are always a lengthy process and I haven't been able to take care of uploads yet. So, for the next few days (or until I find some free time to take care of it), uploads will be disabled. Additionally, all pending uploads have not been restored to the server yet, so any Frequent Contributors will be unable to access those temporarily. It also is very likely that some of the more recent uploads will have been lost permanently in the process. I hope the contributors of those docs will be able to re-upload the lost docs. When uploads are available again I will post more information about the lost docs.

Otherwise, everything seems to be working correctly, but as always, let me know if anything is broken or if there are any questions.

  News :: Non-English manuals
A feature that's been sitting on the backburner for a few years now...

and it's still not where I'd like it to be, but we can now officially call replacementdocs an international archive.

As of today, there is a new drop-down selection that must be made when submitting docs - Region/Language. Currently we have a list of 17 countries that are likely to have video game documentation specific to their region. Additionally, you can specify if a doc is Multi-Language as many European releases are.

When you specify a region, a prefix will be attached to the document type. This prefix will be based on the country's IANA-assigned domain code (the two-letter code that identifies website domain names for a particular country). For example, a manual from Germany would have "DE Manual" as its doc type. An install guide from Spain would be "ES Install Guide". Multi-Lingual docs will use "ML1" as a prefix. Games with multiple Multi-Lingual releases will increment the prefix: "ML2", "ML3", etc. Any docs without a country code are assumed to be of United States origin.

There are some limitations, however. There is currently no way to search "only German docs" for example. There is also currently no way to know which regions/languages are contained in a Multi-Language doc. I would like to add these features eventually, though.

Note that our list of 17 regions is based on the most common game release regions. However, if you would like to upload docs from other regions we will be glad to add more regions for you.

In the past, I have requested advisors for each Non-English language that we support. While I do think that there will still be occasional need for this, the editors and myself will make our best efforts to identify and properly deal with Non-English manuals ourselves.

I think that covers everything... bring on the Non-English manuals!
