I received a very interesting email from a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It was one of the rare nice emails I receive, thanking me for my (and all the visitors') efforts to provide these docs to the public.
He mentioned that he works in the Gaming division of the office and that the people in his department regularly use replacementdocs 2-4 times per month to assist in evaluating patent applications. Apparently, it helps them obtain concrete evidence about whether there were pre-existing examples of some game mechanic or concept that someone else was trying to patent.
With typical government bureaucracy, though, he said that I probably shouldn't post the letter because he wasn't officially permitted to represent the patent office and I guess he might get in trouble. Still, it's pretty cool to think that people actually use this resource at their jobs!

... and that should do it. All previously existing files should now be restored for access. If you find any downloads that are broken, please use the "Report broken download" link that is on every download page. I've usually ignored those reports in the past because the majority were all false alarms. With PlanetMirror out of the picture, I'm hoping that will no longer be an issue.
But please make sure your browser can properly handle opening PDF files before reporting broken downloads. There is a FAQ that deals with not being able to view the docs... check that first.
So far, things seem to be stable with the new host. It looks like we have much better transfer speeds. I'm pretty happy so far and I'm sure our visitors are too.
Next up, I will be reworking the system I use to post new docs. Once I get that set to work with the new download host we will be resuming updates. Thanks for your patience through all this!

And after another slew of file transfers, the PC and Xbox archives should be back online. The final chunk of files remaining to be transitioned are all the more recent additions (added in the last 6-9 months) across all platforms.

OK, so I've started the long process of moving all of our existing files from PlanetMirror to an alternate storage facility. I've tested it personally, but we'll see how well it really works once everybody starts hammering it for real.
Currently, all of the docs with the exception of PC docs, Xbox docs, and some of the more recently added docs should be available again.
As always let me know if you see any glaring issues and I will be working on moving the rest as well.

As many of you know, the PlanetMirror archive has been down for a few weeks now (I believe). I normally have contacted a particular person at their organization for problems with the archive, but haven't heard a response from him yet. So, I just sent in a support request to their general support mailbox. Hopefully I will know something soon.
I know this update sounds more like "there is no update" because nothing has changed yet, but I wanted everyone to know that it's not being ignored (at least from my end).

I've been spending a little time on a side project that is not directly related to replacementdocs in any way, but I'm posting about it anyway because I think some of our visitors would be interested in it.
It's a website called Intelligent Gamer. I intend for it to be a gaming community that fosters intelligent discussion of games. And by "games" I mean all types of games, not just video games. So this would include tabletop games and pen and paper role playing games.
I have seen some very intelligent discussion from time to time on replacementdocs, but ultimately we are primarily a download site, so the discussions are few and far between. However, this leads me to believe that some of those same people who have those conversations here would be interested in participating at Intelligent Gamer. Hopefully with an environment focused on those discussions, it will be able to flourish more easily than at a site like replacementdocs.
